While I've got them fresh in my mind, I decided to use this post to outline the 3 laws of riding an auto rickshaw in Delhi.
1. You will experience a near-miss with another vehicle and/or a near-death experience at least ONCE per ride
2. There is only a 1 in 17 chance the driver will know how to get where you're going -- even if it's a major tourist destination
3. You will automatically be charged the foreigner price, which even AFTER a great deal of haggling is still more than the locales pay
And, here are my accompanying tips for riding an auto rickshaw
1. Don't expect the driver to follow the laws of the road as they exist back home. They will break them, including but not limited to ignoring lanes, running lights and even driving down the wrong side of the road.
2. If you get a driver that obviously knows where you want to go, take him, even if he charges you a bit more. It ain't worth the hassle.
3. Even if you're getting the foreigner price, still haggle. Always.
